AirAsia X orders more A330s

A330-200s to fly on non-stop services to Europe

AirAsia X, the long haul low fare affiliate of the Malaysia-based AirAsia Group, has placed a firm order with Airbus for three A330-200s. Scheduled for delivery from 2014, the aircraft will be operated on the carrier's expanding network, offering low fare service to destinations in Europe, Asia and the Pacific. The latest contract brings AirAsia X's total number of A330s ordered to 28.

AirAsia X has ordered the 238 tonne increased take-off weight version of the A330-200, which is capable of flying non-stop from Kuala Lumpur to Europe. The airline will configure the aircraft in a two class layout with a total of 288 seats.

"This order reflects our positive outlook for the long haul low cost market out of Asia," said Azran Osman Rani, Chief Executive Officer, AirAsia X. “With its low fuel burn, spacious cabin and extended range, the A330 is the perfect aircraft for us to build our business, enabling more people to fly further at lower cost than ever before."

"This latest order from AirAsia X underscores the position of the A330 as the most efficient aircraft in its class flying today," said John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer Customers, Airbus. "The A330's low operating costs, range capability and proven reliability make it the clear winner for airlines flying in the growing long haul budget market."

AirAsia is the largest low cost airline group in the Asia-Pacific region and operates an all-Airbus fleet. Altogether, the group has now ordered over 200 aircraft from Airbus, including 175 single aisle A320s, 28 A330s and 10 A350 XWBs.

The twin engine A330 is one of the most widely used widebody aircraft in service today. To date, Airbus has won more than 1,100 orders for the various versions of the aircraft. Some 750 A330s have already been delivered and the aircraft is currently flying with 90 operators worldwide in 50 countries.

Incident: Qantas A388 near Delhi on Feb 15th 2011, engine oil problem

By Simon Hradecky, created Friday, Feb 18th 2011 07:50Z, last updated Friday, Feb 18th 2011 08:01Z
A Qantas Airbus A380-800, registration VH-OQC performing flight QF-31 from Singapore (Singapore) to London Heathrow,EN (UK), was enroute near Delhi (India) when the crew noticed that the oil quantity of engine #4 (Trent 972, outboard right hand) gradually decreased. The crew continued to London crossing the European Airspace until 125nm eastnortheast of London at FL380 and landed safely on London's runway 09R.

The airplane subsequently remained on the ground in London, the return flight QF-32 was performed by VH-OQG instead. VH-OQC was able to depart for its next flight QF-10 about 18 hours after arrival in London.

The Australian Transportation Safety Board (ATSB) reported that following the landing an engineering inspection revealed "that the fitting of the external HP/IP oil line had less than the required torque". The engine power was reduced to idle at some stage of the cruise for the remainder of the flight.

Radar data show the aircraft passed Moscow (Russia) at FL381 (11600 meters) about 3 hours prior to landing, descended to FL380 upon reaching Latvia and continued until a point 125nm eastnortheast of London at FL380 before beginning the descent into London.

Skymark Airlines of Japan confirms order for four A380s

First Japanese airline to operate the A380

Skymark Airlines, Japan’s third largest and fast growing airline, signed a contract for four A380s with Airbus, firming up a Memorandum of Understanding announced in November 2010.
The contract was signed on Thursday, 17th February, during a ceremony held at Airbus' headquarters in Toulouse, France, in the presence of Skymark Airlines President, Shinichi Nishikubo, Airbus President and CEO, Tom Enders, and Airbus Chief Operating Officer Customers, John Leahy, together with Airbus Japan CEO, Stephane Ginoux.
At the signing ceremony Shinichi Nishikubo said, “We believe that the A380, the world’s most cost-efficient, modern and environmentally friendly aircraft with cutting-edge technologies, will provide us with a strong competitive advantage and safe operation. We will become the very first Japanese airline to offer our passengers a unique and new experience of flying – more space, more comfort and a quieter cabin. With the four-engined A380, we are free from ETOPS constraints and can provide flexible operations.”
“We are pleased to welcome Skymark as our newest and first Japanese A380 customer,” said Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO.  “The A380 is the most eco-efficient solution to allow Japan's air traffic to grow in a capacity constrained environment.”
The A380 is the most advanced, spacious and eco-efficient airliner in service today. Over ten million passengers have already enjoyed the unique experience of flying on board the all-new aircraft. The in-service fleet has accumulated by now almost 250,000 revenue flight hours in nearly 28,000 commercial flights. 20 major airports are currently served by the flagship of the 21st century.
Today, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, and Air France operate the aircraft on daily services to Narita Airport. Starting from March 27, 2011, Singapore Airlines will extend its A380 operation from Narita to Los Angeles, while Korean Air’s first A380 service to Narita is scheduled on June 1 this year.
Following today's announcement, total firm orders for the A380 stand at 244 from 19 customers worldwide and 43 aircraft have been delivered to five customers.
